From the 9th Century to the 11th Century, marauding Viking warriors laid waste to a broad swath of Europe, and in the process often took slaves for physical labor and sex. Now researchers from the University of Oslo in Norway say they’ve found new evidence suggesting that when their Viking masters died, slaves were beheaded and buried along with them.

The Charvolant, a flying or kite-carriage, patented in 1826. Relying on a pair of large kites on long lines for power, the Charvolant could carry six passengers at speeds of up to 25 mph. In his 1827 book, The Aeropleustic Art, or Navigation in the Air by the Use of Kites, or Bouyant Sails, Pocock recorded that on a straight road, the Charvolant could cover a mile in under three minutes. (IIRC, most of the studio heads were Jewish (me too), which makes this an unsettling story.)
